The NRI program benefits those shippers who have a large volume of shipments to multiple Canadian companies. Those companies that are just starting to ship to Canada should also consider the program as it may help develop their business in Canada.
Benefits include:
• Provide a landed cost to Canada customers
• Minimize clearance delays and create a domestic purchase environment
• Enhance sales through direct marketing
• Experience consistent customs clearance
• Improve ordering process and customer experience by providing comprehensive pricing
Most U.S. businesses qualify for NRI status. The exception would be fulfillment houses that do not have ownership of the goods being shipped.
FedEx Trade Networks has a group of professionals dedicated to answering customer questions on the NRI program.
They can assist you with:
• Account setup
• Information on brokerage rates and other FedEx Trade Networks’ services
• NAFTA issues
• My Global Trade Data shipment tracking
• Documentation requirements and preparation

The NRI program enables a U.S. shipper, who in most cases does not have a physical presence in Canada, to clear the goods in their name as the Importer of Record. The U.S. shipper can also prepay all of the duties and Goods & Services Tax (GST) for their Canada shipments.
There are no set up fees to establish your company as a Non-Resident Importer. However, there may be fees involved for the classification of products to determine duty rates. These fees will be included in the customs clearance fees.
Yes. In order to become a corporate account with the CBSA, you will need to apply for a business number. This is a unique number for the importer and is required to import goods into Canada. If you already have a Business Number with CBSA, you do not need to establish a new number for your NRI shipments. This number will be required at the time of set up.
Yes. The customs broker will act on your behalf to represent you to CBSA. They will work with you to streamline the customs process and manage other details critical to the exporting and importing of goods legally and as quickly as possible. For NRI, the customs broker will act as the Importer of Record for the shipment.
No. FedEx Ground provides small package delivery services. FedEx Ground works in conjunction with FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage (Canada), Inc. (FedEx Trade Networks) to provide customs clearance for their shipments.
FedEx Trade Networks is one of the largest volume customs entry filers in North America with over 5 million annual transactions. It is important to note that FedEx Ground’s transportation fees do not include any type of customs brokerage fee. All brokerage fees, duties and taxes will be invoiced separately regardless of who is the designated customs broker.
